The John Milton Series Books 79 The John Milton Series Mark Dawson 9781544052595 Books

John Milton, former assassin for the British government, having left that Service after years of killing, sets out to balance the moral books by making amends using his considerable acquired skills to assist others who need them to fix problems with violent people. The series, I’ve read 9 of the books, is set with familiarity in various locations internationally.
He fights his own demons constantly and mostly remains a loner. Unfortunately, some people around him become casualties - there is nothing Pollyanna about the stories or John. The currency of the issues brought up reflect the world today and together with fastidious detail brings the stories to life and helps give them all a level of reality and plausibility, I know more John Milton books exist and will come off Dawson’s pen, but just in case they run out, thankfully he has written other series. I am a fan and will read them all.

The John Milton Series Books 79 The John Milton Series Mark Dawson 9781544052595 Books Reviews

See my review of volumes 4-6. It was said that number four or five made his career, can't remember which, but I found number three compelling. The reason Dawson receives a "good" rather than "great" is that I reserve superlatives for the best of the best like Steinbeck or Buck or Lewis. This doesn't mean the stories aren't compelling. They are highly readable.
While I would gladly have bought these books individually, it was nice that they were in a set like this. I have provided comments on each of the books separately. I will say is nice to see how John Milton, the main character in the series, has developed over the course of time. He seems to be becoming more focused on doing right in order to put to rest the demons that haunt him from all his years of service to his government. Nice to see someone who has "retired" yet still gets to use the skills he worked so hard to acquire.
I find Mark Dawson's John Milton character to be more compelling, and more nuanced than Lee Child's Jack Reacher and I am a big fan of the Reacher series. Milton is also ex-military, but from a deeper and more secretive unit. His motives for becoming involved in situations that he, like Reacher, stumbles upon inadvertantly are much more complex and are driven by his pyshological need to makes amends for his past sins -- even though he realizes that as much good as he does, he will never balance the ledger. Dawson moves his books from city to city, country to country, and continent to continent. Four stars rather than five as all books like these tend to raise your eyebrows a bit in plot development, but if you like thrillers to get your mind off the daily grind you will enjoy this series.
I've read every book in the 3 boxed sets, for the most part, straight through. Just starting Blackout, #10 in the series. The author has an amazing grasp on intrigue, weaponry, war & spy scenarios. Each book has Milton doing amazing & dangerous things as he embarks on his new redemptive mission. Mr. Dawson has a seemingly unending supply of always different, always exciting story lines...there is typically a lady in play but the author keeps his characters clear of the old underlying story of sexual escapades. I really appreciate that he stays on task.
This is another great set of nicely priced books for the hard core Milton fan. By the time you get this far with Milton, you just can't get enough. Milton might be a flawed character but he's really the good guy throughout and he's traveling all over the place and somehow always doing the right thing for people. I love the other characters that Mr. Dawson creates along the way. I've now read all of the Milton books and all of Beatrix and Isabella Rose books. I can't wait for new installments by Mr. Dawson.
The John Milton books just keep getting better and better. Problem is, the author can't possibly write as fast as I can read, so there are only two book left in the series I haven't read. I'm torn between devouring them and hoarding them, which is a tough choice for a reader. (In the meantime, I've already started re-reading the series from book one, The Cleaner. Maybe by the time I'm done with book nine I'll decide.)
I believe author, Mark Dawson, must be a spy to be able write so realistically! His stories are written so vividly! Each rich detail adds to the realism! His characters come alive in his words, as his narrative paints the suspense and action into the movie in my mind. I think this author must have shadowed a "craftsman" in this chosen vocation of espionage spy and a master "cleaner".

Every book in this series of nine (and counting, I hope), has been as exciting as the most thrilling and suspenseful rollercoaster ride! The anticipation builds and builds to scenes that play out right before your eyes in great detail and realism -- be a witness to the deeds of John Milton!

If you like master spies and masterful storytelling, you need to get on this ride! Do you like thrillers? Suspense? Vivid realism? Intense action? They're all in there!
